Title: Rule Changes MUST READ!
Post by: Evil Bob on September 05, 2011, 01:38:49 PM
While this game uses Legend of the Five Rings 4th Edition (and supplements) for it's play there are some rule changes for this forum in particular that must be followed.  Please read the changes and clarification below and comply with them.

Character Creation
Most changes to the game will be with how and what you can make your character.

Starting CP: 125

School Choices
Banned: Asako Heinshin, Any school presented in Enemies of the Empire save the Ronin paths, Heichi Bushi, Original Chuda.
Restricted: Any Monk, limit 2 PC at any one time in the game (see special abilities below for clarification).  Monks will not be a part of the Legion.  This includes clan monks like Togashi, Spider and Witch Hunters.
Clarification: Any Spider: With the induction of the Spider as an imperially accepted part of Rokugan a character can be of that clan, but may not have taint.  Any character found to have Shadowlands taint, Spider or not, will be thrown out of the Imperial Legion and possibly imprision or killed.
Clarification: Kitsune and Toritaka schools are now part of the Mantis and Crab respectively.
Rank 2 Techniques: All schools must replace their rank 2 technique with Path: Imperial Legionnaire pg 256 Core.  It does not have a school tag for this game, meaning it will become the school type of any school you already have. A few other changes to the school changes:
Replaces: Any School, Rank2
Technique:  ...When working alongside Emerald or Jade Magistrates or Imperial Legionaires, when you spend a Void point to enhance a roll you also gain a bonus to the roll equal to the number of allied legionnaires or magistrates within 25 feet...  (see special abilities below for exceptions)

Family Choices
All character must be from a great clan, minor clan or ronin.  They cannot be non-human or a human foreigner.
Banned: Heichi, Original Chuda.

Starting Status and Glory:
Status starts at 1.0 for all characters (save monks).  Starting glory is equal to your insight rank (save monks who get half that).

Advantages & Disadvantages
You may only have 15 points of Advantages (including ancestors) and 10 points of Disadvantages.  A GM may reject any combination of Advantages/Disadvantages he feels may not be right for the game.
Allies: Please work with GM to craft an ally that will actually be able to help in this area.  Allies that do not have a presence in this game but can be used to name drop can be bought at any devotion level for 0 XP (because they really can't do anything until the game is over other than communication via shugenja).
Blackmail: Work with GM to give your character blackmail that actually works with the NPCs in this game.  If it's on another PC, the player must agree to this.
Darling of the Court: Banned (useless in this game)
Gentry: Banned (useless again)
Karmic Tie: Karmic Tie will not be allowed with an NPC.  Any Karmic Tie with a PC must be agreed to by the Player before hand.
Social Posistion: Banned.  Please replace Social Position with the advantages below:
Nikutai [Social] (2 points): You have the position of assistant to a Gunso.  Your status is 1.5.  This advantage is Limited.  Please see the Military Structure Thread.
Gunso [Social] (8 points): You have the position and responsibilities of a sergeant.  Your status is 3.0.  Please see the Military Structure Thread.
Way of the Land: Restricted, Dragon Clan only, or those with Dragon Clan schools, or are a monk.
Way of the Daimyo Advantages: Banned
Inheritance Horse (2 or 4 points, 1 or 3 points for Unicorn): You have a Rokugani Pony (2 points) or a Unicorn Riding Horse (3 points) that is trained for battle that you inherited from your family.  Unicorn can buy this advantage for one point less.  If you already have a horse in your equipment you need not buy this advantage.

Black Sheep: Banned
Dark Fate: Banned
Forced Retirement: Banned
Hostage: Banned
Social Disadvantage: Banned.  Ronin begin play with 1 status as members of the Imperial Legion.
Any Ancestor that forbids a character to harm another: Banned

All Advantages and Disadvantages from Enemies of the Empire are also banned, except for Inheritance:Falcon.

Special Abilities:
Every PC begins play with a special ability.  This ability is absolutely free!  Just pick one, put it on your sheet and you're golden.  Some restrictions apply to Abilities that give or take status.  Think of it like a benefit from the Heritage Tables.

Skilled: Pick one skill.  Your character has the ability to make one extra raise with that skill.
Tough: You gain a +1 reduction at all times.
Touched: Pick an element except void.  You can cast one more spell a day in that element.
Learned: You know one extra spell at Character Creation from those that you are able to cast.
Specialized: You gain any one emphasis at character creation for free.
Armed: You may take one extra weapon as part of your starting gear.
Prepared: You may choose 15 items for your traveling pack instead of 10.
Reverent: You may gain an ancestor for 3 less CP, to a minimum of 1.
Apt: Choose one Trait, you may explode on rolls with that trait even if you do not have the skill.
Strength of Heaven: The TN penalties you suffer from wound ranks are reduced by 2.  This can be stacked with Strength of the Earth.
Cavalry: You start with a Rokugan Pony or a Unicorn Riding Horse.
Powerful: You ignore 1 point of reduction on an opponent with any weapon and unarmed.
Standard Training: You did not get trained in the Imperial Legionnaire Technique.  You have your original school's Rank 2 Technique or a Path Technique connected to that school, or a different school technique if that advantage is taken.

Restricted Special Abilities (cont...)
Gunso: You gain the Gunso Advantage for free.  There are some restrictions on this.
Chui: If you have the Gunso Advantage, You become one of the 4 Chui of this regiment.  Limit 4.
Monk: You become a Monk.  You live in the nearby temple and are not part of the legion.  You do not take the Legionnaire technique.  Limit 2.
Special Note: If more people wish to be ranked or a monk than can be supported by the game it will be determined randomly who gets these abilities.  Once the game has begun, these posistions will be locked and no one may take them unless one of the current PCs leaves the game.

Rules Mechanics
Honor Roll
A character will be allowed to make an honor roll once a week.

XP
http://evilbob.fallenash.com/index.php?topic=449.0

Honor, Glory, Status
All three must be in a character's signature.  There is no roll needed to know a person's honor, status or glory.  The army is tight knit and word gets out (while they may not know your specific actions that lead to you being dishonorable, they can tell you are by the way you carry yourself and then word spreads).  If you have percieved honor you will post that instead. Gains and losses will be but in the thread in question just like XP.

Way of the Daimyo points
Not used in this game.

How will increases in insight rank be dealt with?

In the legion you are always training.  Assume you have a teacher here for you next rank tech and when you go up in insight rank you also go up in school rank.

Does that include paths, or just the school rank tech?

Yes.  The Legion has a diverse selection of schools and paths.  The only thing I won't allow is multiple schools in game.

I've noticed a diffidence of Calvary in the game.  To make it a more viable concept I added a Inheritance: Horse advantage for anyone to take.  If anyone wishes to change their character to have a horse, they may as long as they resubmit their character to the GM afterwards.

After much thinking I'm going to have to ban any ancestor that requires a person not to do harm to another creature.  This is a Legion, you will be put to war, even if you are primarily a healer.  The Legion rejects those that don't conduct war.

Excellent idea Bob. I mean, people get chosen for these appointments. Even if you were THE Asahina pacifist or a Phoenix pacifist - as a leader choosing who to push into service to the legions or offer the opportunity to - you would have to be pretty stupid to send someone that didn't want to fight. Hell, I'd see it as a good way of getting rid of the violent element. Send them off to war while the homelands stay pure and pacifist

The Imperial Legions are supposed to have quite a big bit of cushion-heaters, but it's true that giving the assignment to a person that it is public knowledge cannot shed blood (be it by an oath common to the Asahina or otherwise) is kinda bordering on insult.

More succinctly said. I may need to start taking lessons from you Shin. You have a way with words!
