Title: Roll the Dice
Post by: Evil Bob on September 06, 2011, 11:30:19 AM
I have integrated a die roller to the forum.  It's not perfect for L5R, but very useful.
Here how it works.
Lets say you have a skill of 3 and a trait of three.
you will post 6d10v10, highlight it and use the Dice Roll icon above the text area.
All tens rolled will be posted with a strikethrough.  Like this 10 5.  Consider this one roll.
If you have a emphasis the same roll will look like this: 6d10^1v10 (this will give all 1's a strikethrough and roll it again).
If you have a static bonus (lets say +3) it will look like this 6d10+3v10 or 6d10+3^1v10 for emphasis
You can give the roll a name by putting this in front of it {roll name}.
Make sure your roll name has exactly what you are rolling in it!  Example: {Courtier (Conversation) 6k3 make one raise}
Ignore the total at the end of the dice roll message.  It's useless in L5R, with a roll and keep method.
Modifying and editing a post with a roll will give an error message in red.

You may also use http://invisiblecastle.com/  But I will only accept rolls with the full character name in the name area of the roll (and nothing added).  I'm not putting a tutorial for IC here.

If you have any questions I'll be happy to answer them.

Here are some examples
Example 1 6d10v10 : 4, 5, 10 1, 9, 10 6, 8, total 33

Example 2 6d10^1v10 : 10 4, 1 9, 8, 7, 8, 5, total 41

Example 3 6d10+3^1v10 : 1 4, 6, 3, 7, 9, 1 5 + 3, total 37

In example 1 you have a standard 6k3.  Taking the highest you get 11, 9 & 16 for a total of 36 (you add the 10 to the next number in the list)
In example 2 you have an emphasis.  Taking the highest you get 14, 9 & 8 for a total of 31 (you ignore the 1)
In example 3 you have an emphasis and a +3 bonus.  Taking the highest you get 6, 7 & 9 +3 for a total of 25

There is one situation I would like to resolve.  What if you have an emphasis and roll a 10 followed by a 1?  It would look like this:
8, 10 1 7, 2, 6, 9, 3
In this situation, since an exploding die counts as one die, you would take the next number only and ignore anything else before the comma.  In a 6k3 situation, taking the highest, the total of this roll would be 8, 11, 9: 28

From what I understand of the notation it isn't picking any dice - you're doing so after the fact.  So if you wanted to keep low you would just declare and pick such.  Though I might be misreading - it is a little complex for me having just woken up.

Hi guys. I'm a major newb to this game, so, a dumb question would be.  Why not just roll real dice?  Question directed mainly to GM of course.  |:)

Its just a documentation thing mostly. We play by honor here so the extra documentation is always helpful when a issue might arise.

While I am not a GM for this game, I have been a GM in the past, and I know many who have also played that part.
The sad truth is; some players cheat.  This happens on tabletop as well as on forums. Now, I am not accusing people here of cheating, but as a GM, I have in the past come across players cheating, voluntarily or not (like using wrong Trait for a roll, not noting down their raises when they roll, etc). These cases are of course a rare occurrance, but using Invisible Castle have been a great help in rooting such people out as well as having the players capable of making their own rolls without having to wait for a GM everytime. When I first started playing online, we had to have the GMs roll for us.

I'm getting a bunch of requests for IC, so I'll go ahead and allow it.  :)
That said: I want full character names listed on every roll, and nothing else.
Thus I will not accept any roll from Milli, but will from Asahina Milli.  Thanks!

I'm glad to see that IC will be allowed but I do want to thank the GMs for including the onsite roller as well.  This is the best of both worlds as when (not if) IC goes down during the game we'll have this to use as well.  But IC does seem a bit easier to work with if only from past experience with it.

IC is what exactly?

http://invisiblecastle.com/ (http://invisiblecastle.com/) Site where you can roll dice, and keep a log of your rolls. Also, 503 at the moment.

In order to keep a more permanent log of your rolls, you'll need to make an account.

Be advised: GMs will be able to track how many times you did the roll to get the result you want.
