Name: Yoritomo Virendra

Description: Virendra is your typical Mantis sailor bushi. Her skin is slightly darker and her hair is slightly lighter than your average Rokugani, a testament to her time spent aboard ship. Her clothing is sensible and her hair is kept tied back, usually in a braid or ponytail. Virendra's reputation as a ruthless sailor preceeds the woman however, usually to disastrous results.

Background: Virendra is the exact middle child out of five. Her older sister and twin (slightly older) brother were both fostered to the Unicorn as part of her parents' wedding contract, while her two younger brothers are currently serving in Second City. Her mother is a former Moto (who had a strong passion for the Ivory Kingdoms) and her father is a former kobune captain, who is now close to retirement.

The young Mantis never stood out during her training, even though it was understood that she would be taking her father's position as captain of the White Storm upon his retirement. A vessel which has been under the care and control of her family since before the Mantis were even a Minor Clan. When she reached her gempukku, Virendra was duly apprenticed to the captain of the Daikoku's Heart, a Tortoise merchant vessel. She stayed only a year, furthering her education in commerce, before being called back to the Mantis fleet and the Thunder's Fury.

The Fury saw most of its use as an escort ship for merchants and travelers voyaging from the Isles to the mainland. It was during one such run that the vessel was attacked by a group of ronin pirates, engaging the much larger ship in a deadly battle. By the end of it, more than half of both crews were either sinking into Suitengu's final embrace, or laying on the deck of the Fury, mortally wounded. Virendra, the captain, the ship's Moshi priestess and a young Scorpion Emerald Magistrate were only a few of the survivors (aside from the captured pirates) left standing. No one, save Virendra herself, knew that she never gave the order to kill the pirates, and it was here that her reputation as a ruthless and savage sailor began.

Virendra put the incident behind her and continued on aboard the Fury. Eventually, word of the wild stories surrounding the battle reached the Yoritomo's ears, much to her great embarassment. The stories had painted her as some sort of (in her mind) monster, while the truth is the woman would hardly dare hurt a fly. The stories have called into question her reports on the battle more times than Virendra cares to count, and caused a few minor scandals in various ports along the Rokugani coastline - most notably in the Crane and Phoenix lands.

Virendra is quite new to the Imperial Legions, her admittance coming shortly before the brigade was sent north to Dragon lands. She has reason to suspect the Mantis, her father in particular, were quite eager to give the woman a break from sea life in the hopes of restoring her name.

Description:

Kaemon is not as big as your average Hida, but what he lacks in stature he makes up for in muscle bulk.  He is imposing and knows how to use that to his advantage, often standing tall, proud and mean over anyone whose attention he is trying to get.  He wears his hair in a simple top knot and rarely takes it down for washing.  His armor is the first thing on him in the morning and the last thing off.  He has been known to sleep in it on occasion.  Also, besides his daisho he is nearly always carrying his mai chong in hand.  He will leave it outside of the tent when visiting with superiors, but it is a distinct weapon and pretty much everybody knows whose it is.

Another glaringly noticeable detail about Kaemon is that he is always watching.  When his eyes move over a person, the look goes through them, into them around them.  He watches the horizon, he glances at the ground.  Occasionally he will close his eyes and concentrate for a moment but he is still probably looking at you when he does so.  The man takes watch very seriously and even though a nikutai is not generally expected to perform watch duties he will sometimes make rounds to ensure those on watch are doing an adequate job.

Description: Amano does not appear terribly interested in grooming himself. A permanent layer of rust-flecked stubble adorns his jaw, its length varying daily according to his mood. Atop his head is an unkempt head of short, unruly brown hair. Above his strikingly green eyes are expressive bushy eyebrows that augment the warmth of his perpetual smile. He prefers to wear a loose kimono of dark green trimmed with silver and a pair of baggy black hakama, which lends a bit more mass to his slender frame while disguising well-toned muscles.

Description:
The first child of Shinjo Riou and Shinjo (formerly Kakita) Haruka, Shu moves with a fluid grace few can match.  He tends to be introverted and has an interest in the Hare Maiden Usagi Hibiki who he met one summer while the two of them were studying Iaijutsu as part of an exchange program with the Kakita Dueling Academy, and it is not at all uncommon to see Shu composing a letter to his love.  Shu also tends to be an optimist and tries his best to encourage those in his unit and his optimism is a ray of hope to those around him

Description:

Shokami is a man with a runner's build. He constantly exercises by running, knowing that stamina is directly linked to a fight. He's a simple man, wearing sturdy clothing, and favoring his Clans' colors over anything else. He usually has a gentle smile on his face, and is noticeably kind to the entire Legion, but pokes gentle fun at South Company. He carries a scarf under his armor, and can be seen constantly viewing the inside of his helmet. He's quiet and unassuming much of the time, but when fighting does not know how to back down. He tries to resist, but tends to be a bit of a busy body and sticks his nose into most problems, he makes an opinion and then speaks it clearly.

He wears the Toku Bushi mon on his right, and his Family mon on the left. He carries a worn and beat up war fan on his left side, next to his wakazashi.

Hajime is a man of a slight, if toned, build.  His eyes are perhaps the most expressive part of him, always diligently scanning the area he finds himself in to try and spy something interesting, but he often wears a scowl around others.  Hajime wears a somewhat unkempt beard but keeps his hair short.  He wears the colors of a Kitsune in the standard reds and browns, but accepts a few concessions of Mantis green in his armor.  The mon of the Kitsune family rests over his heart while that of the Tsuruchi Bounty Hunters claims a place opposite.  Hajime carries a daisho as well as a yumi and arrows in a quiver strapped to his back.  He is rarely, if ever, seen without a wiry red-furred akita named Sumi.
Hajime is not known to be very personable, rarely, if ever, speaking unless spoken to except when issuing a report.  He seems to prefer the company of his dog to other people, and he takes his job as a scout very seriously. 

Akodo Inuichi

Akodo Inuichi is one of the finest examples of a lion you will ever see. Standing tall and showing signs of a vigorous training regimen, none can doubt his nature as a bushi. This hair is normally tied back in a pony tail in finer settings or simply held from his eyes by a band when in the field. His clothing consists of greens, light browns, and the occasional gold spot with the imperial and lion mons located appropriately. The cut of his clothing is efficient and good for movement.

Inuichi will attempt to be somewhat personable but one can clearly see that he finds his peace in the wilderness on the path of duty than in the finer court settings of the empire.

His face is expressive and his manner friendly. Perhaps too friendly; Perhaps too charming.  He wears a mask of silk across the bridge of his nose, a nod to his vanity. However, he is quick to laugh at himself as well as others. His clothing, immaculately clean, tumbles leisurely across his body.

She rarely is adorned with cosmetics, and seems much less polished than a typical crane maiden.

Shin is a career soldier, and he bears all the marks of one. His face and hands were roughened by the weather and toils of the years spent serving the glory of the Empire. His eyes are dark and deep, ponds of memories of the darkest days Rokugan has ever faced. The old man served among the guards long before the coming of the Destroyer, and his service with the Imperial armies protecting the lands and the people of the Empress has been long. Shin's body isn't what it used to be. Not only the old age, but the War itself left a trail of scars and wounds. He has some difficulty moving without his cane, and the aches turn almost unbearable in the heat of the summers and the humidity of the autumns. Yet, the old soldier serves on. He may seem distant, cold and harsh to many, yet his first priority is to ensure that the armies of Her Highness stay sharp and ready for whatever new enemy surely awaits the Empire in the future.

Name: Kitsuki Masakaze

Masakaze is an odd one. A gunso for a medium and heavy infantry squad within the Imperial Legion. An odd bushi of indeterminate gender who wears baggy clothes, is almost perpetually in armour, is quite tall and happy hangs around with even the worst elements in the army yet... Masakaze always addresses themself as one. One has strange habits and feminine features too. Sometimes one's nails will be painted. One always smells nice. One has a gentle voice and laugh for the most part. Yet one is so boisterous at times and fine with fighting. Is Masakaze a cross dressing girl, a trap of a man or something else? Nobody is quite sure. Perhaps not even Masakaze. The gunso's habit of wearing a mask at times doesn't aid the situation, nor do the covering clothes and armour or one's ability to laugh off questions.

Masakaze is quite easy going and charismatic and only rose to the rank of gunso near the end of the fighting. One is quick to tell a joke or laugh and enjoys playing pranks on others - for them to learn from their mistakes and to gain insight into themselves of course. Behind this more relaxed atmosphere is a keen thinker, tactician and someone unusually gifted with words. This Kitsuki would have made a great courtier if not for their penchant for sword play. The gunso has no visible scars or wounds. Indeed, none of those in the gunso's squad can remember the gunso being wounded in battle. Masakaze has a very slim build, perhaps even thin. Finally, the gunso sometimes enjoys answering questions with a question or posing a riddle. This person is an oddity even to other Mirumoto trained swordsmen...

Masakaze can be seen with one's swords most of the time along with heavy or light armor, along with various customised wide based kimonos that dance with the wind. The armor shows that the gunso takes the job and its risks seriously. Indeed, it appears to be one of the few things that one does take seriously. The gold trimmed armor is very noticeable, as are the blue and hold handled blades - one in a deep blue, one in a deep black saya.

Impressive might be a kind word to describe Moto Wake though terrifying is not an uncommon choice either.  His massive size, dwarfing even many Crab, combined with the coarse, wind weathered, features of the Moto and the scars of many battles cast the warrior in a grim light.  His black hair is kept short and uneven, cut by whatever blade happens to be on hand at the time.  His blue eyes betray the distant gaijin blood of his Moto ancestors.  Any revealed skin is scattered with minor scars, including a rather intense burn on the left side of his neck, reminders of many a reckless charge in battle.

Those who have served beside Wake would be well aware of the strange duality of his nature.  

In battle the Moto is reckless and brutal, prone to grinning and laughing like a madman as he cuts down the enemies of the Empire.  He throws himself fully into battle with no concern for his own well being and, while he follows orders, they are interpreted as directly and bluntly as possible.  Many wonder how someone so uncaring for their own safety could have survived both War of Dark Fire and the Plague War but Moto Wake is a veteran of both and has served in the Legion for most of that time.

Outside of battle, however, Wake is a calm soul and slow to anger.  When playing the flute, which is most occasions he is given free time, he could be called downright serene and the music he creates is complex and beautiful.  It is only when faced with anything bordering on treason or blasphemy that the hint of his berserker spark begins to show again and it is well advised to keep such topics out of earshot of the Moto.  His devotion to the Empress and the Empire is clearly fanatical and he is zealous in the enforcement of her laws.

Yasuko bears the marks of one who has lived a rather comfortable life even in the hardships of the Empire since the Destroyer Wars. She doesn't seem to be marred with any scars, she appears healthy and more or less content behind the feigned courtier smile. Her skills with the blade are passable for a member of the Imperial Legions, and she always wear gloves to protect her carefully maintained manicure when in the field.
While she is not a stunning beauty like many Crane and Scorpion, she is nonetheless attractive in her own way, as Yasuko always gives the impression of being clean, proper and composed no matter the situation. Her black hair is well-groomed and gleans with the faint sheen of the expensive oils she treats it with.

In regards to her personality, Yasuko is quite in control of her emotions and while she is approachable and courteous, she never really seem to let her guard down. At least not easily.

Her role in the Legion is to advise her superiors, mostly on matters political in nature, but there have been times where she have offered advice on the subject of military matters as well. Yasuko holds an interest in tactical knowledge, and is an avid player of Shogi (she has claimed that Go is more suitable for philosophy, while Shogi is the true tactician's game as it pits two armies against eachother).
In the rare times that the company have had need for a matter to be investigated, Yasuko is more often than not a volunteer, and she occassionally boast of her time as a yoriki to a prominent Imperial magistrate.

Name: Soshi Karoshi (過労死)

The first thing to notice about Karoshi is that he is not healthy. Sallow, pasty skin gleaming with drops of perspiration. Shallow, uneven breath. Coughing into a cloth, and hiding the content. A face wrinkled and aged quite beyond his years. And yet he walks straight and carries himself with solemn, calm resolve and seems to be heedless of his condition during daily routines, relying on some inner steel that holds him unbent and unbroken.

He is always neatly shaved, and his fu manchu moustaches, goatee and knot are all well-groomed. His garments are functional and relatively plain, incorporating shades of maroon, grey and black, the Clan and Family crests displayed on chest being their only noticeable adornment. The stylised maelstrom of flames around his left eye that serves as his mask is the sole trinket he sports. He carries both swords, and his warrior's movements indicate it's not for show. His ease in military environment as well as a jitte casually tucked behind his obi might both indicate that violence of many variations occurred in his past life.

He appears to be genuinely unemotional. It's like feelings were drained out of him until little remained, and he simply continues without this attribute of humanity. A longer look into his eyes corroborates this impression. They are blank in cathartic way, testifying of some tragic past. Nevertheless he smiles politely and behaves relaxed when situation requires. His presence is not obtrusive or overbearing, he does not jump into conversations, but when he speaks, his words usually attract attention, being carefully selected and ordered. And he always seems to exactly remember all your former conversations with him.

He smells of citruses, a fragrance probably obtained through application of sensibly dosed perfume. Even though he has never been caught on smoking, he may well be hiding the reality of having succumbed to that habit.

Name: Yogo Ousei 養護　鷹正

Profession: Shugenja, Gunso

Ousei is very much a typical Yogo, a little sturdier than the average Scorpion, yet retaining the elegant angular features the Clan is famous for. The man prefers to keep his long, dark hair unbound, bathing rather often to keep himself presentable, especially when the legion stands camped. Dressing in blacks and crimsons, his clothes portray the mon of the Yogo alongside the mon of the Imperial Legions, showing his allegiance to his Family as well as the unit he serves with.  Ousei's long and slender, non- calloused fingers suggest that he had been accustomed to a comfortable life before his command with the Legion, something that has led the less groomed members of the legion referring to them man as 'lady fingers', behind his back.

Keeping his emotions in check, the Yogo is soft spoken when talking to both his inferiors as his superiors. This changes abruptly, however, when the man is upset because of  servants or his underlings. On such occasion the man eagerly expresses his ire, lashing the perpetrators with sharp words and curses. Young female servants know well to fear the man, as his hands tend to take liberties when the girls wander too close, the man all too fond of the pleasures of the flesh.

Carrying his orders effectively and without complaint, Ousei is a man who gets well along with his superiors. Unfortunately, being brooding and silent, the young gunso is not well-liked by his men. The fact that he seems to have a little care for those serving under him does not ease his this matter. This doesn't doesn't bother the man too much.  Yogo Ousei did not join the legion to win fame, or the respect of his men. As far as he is concerned, all he needs is their obedience.

When not on duty, the man can be seen often taking to the field alone with his gyrfalcon, Yuki. Eager to discuss avians, and falconry, he often gets excited when his favourite topic is brought up, talking endlessly about the birds of prey if the situation allows.

Name: Matsu Aoki

First impressions of Aoki are of a fierce, proud woman.  She wastes little time on the niceties of appearance and cosmetics that courtiers and Crane value so highly.  Instead she wears simple, sturdy clothing if not in her armour.  Her hair is short for a samurai-ko but still hangs to her mid-back when left unfettered, which is a rarity as it usually tightly bound.  More often than not her face wears a semi scowl, much like those of her beloved warcats.  For those who manage to garner a glance at her unclothed, she wears several scars with pride.  On closer inspection, if you dare risk such a thing, the scars are more often from bites and claws than blades.  The hazards of raising her cats from cubhood.

Kari and Toki.

Aoki's two warcats are young females.  Full grown and fully trained they pad after their mistress fully regarding her as their pack's Alpha.  Kari is the elder by perhaps a year and the friendlier of the two.  Toki regards all humans but Aoki with suspicion still.  Although mostly quiet and apparently lazy, they can come to full alertness with amazing alacrity on a single order from Aoki.  Aoki affectionately refers to the pair as 'the girls' and quite obviously considers them closer and better friends than any human being.

When those new to the Legion hear of Shiba Takeshi, the most common thing they hear is Loyal. He is very loyal to his men and goes out of his way to ensure they are treated well and with respect. However it comes with a price. He expects his men to be the best possible and represent the legion with honor. He is known for being stern but fair with punishment when his troops fail.

When not directly in the line of duty he is known to be kind and out going and always willing to talk or help a legionnaire, regardless of what company they are from.

Takeshi is known to have a health interest in Iaijutsu and loves studying the subject as well as watching it.

Description.  

At 5'8 Shuichi is not overly tall for a rokugani male his short cut black hair also does little to help him look taller.  Still he is a well muscled man physically fit and active for most of his life it clearly shows.  Handsome by most accounts the major deterrent to his looks are his oddly colored eyes one brown the other green.  He does his best to keep one or the other covered during non duty hours as he doesn't wish the stigma of his evil eye to follow him.

Having been with the legion only a single year Shuichi isn't the best know of the soldiers here though by now it is likely well known by most that he is married to one Moshi (Doji) Kiyomi and has been since shortly after his gempukku and has two children.  His daughter Chise now two and his son Hideki who he has yet to meet but is 6 months old.

Iori is quite a small and shy person and is constantly being mistaken for someone much younger.  Despite her looks, she is quite talented and is a genius in her chosen element and there is no one better to go to when healing is required.  She dispises insects, and is often seen carrying a white fan with a red phoenix in flight motif.  She also takes her looks seriously and is usually seen in a spotless kimono.  Iori does not enjoy the taking of lives and will abstain from doing so if at all possible, but when she does have to use force she is capable of doing her duty.  She also tends to carry a nagamaki and is not unskilled in it's use and one would be wise not to attempt to match her in feats of strenght.  She has also been know to take on duty's as a scout or if absolutely necessary as a guard by using her skills in Water to transform into a bird or something more ferocious.

Description: Following in the footsteps of an esteemed ancestor of the same name, Kitsuki Koan has chosen a martial path unusual for a Dragon- the path of kyujutsu. After a career as a justicar, and an unintended stint in the Imperial Army (still not entirely sure how THAT happened...), he is looking forward to returning to his clan's territory, way of thinking, and to his family. Truth trumps "honor," a philosophy that has been both a guiding light and a burden for him as a justicar and attendee in various courts around the empire. While not as fun as alternative points of view, it has earned him respect from others far more famous or "honorable." It has also gotten him into duels he would have preferred to avoid, but also out of some that, in his eyes, served no purpose. Truth frequently takes the form of an itch needing to be scratched, an un-ease about surface answers in situations that don't seem to add up. Since he is far less interested in wealth, power or fame, or even having to be right, his enemies have had a hard time trying to find his "price." Beyond his precious yumi, a family heirloom that has served him well, his wakizashi, and the portrait of his wife, there is little in the material world that he needs. What he needs, nature provides, or the Fortunes, and so- lacking much, he possess everything. While still searching for answers to the Big Questions, answers beyond the usual stock answers in Rokugan, he is relatively comfortable with himself and his place in the universe. Finally done grieving the death of his beloved wife, he is open to see what the Fortunes have for him.

At first glance, someone may think that there's a random Phoenix child wandering amongst the Legion members. However, upon closer inspection it'll become clear that the young one wears the mon of the Imperial Legions over his heart.

Hanasaku is a true child prodigy. Just shy of a year past a very young gempukku, he is regarded by his sensei and those he advises as a master of strategy and tactics. In addition his training amongst the Asako has gifted him with a wide array of knowledge useful in his position amongst the Legion's company of courtiers.

With inquisitive eyes, somewhat shaggy hair and a face that's still a bit plump, Hanasaku could be called cute... though he'd surely take offense. Socially he is an adult and he knows it. He wears his wakizashi on his hip and though it occasionally hangs quite close to the ground, he still bears it with pride.

Kyotsu wears an old, out-of-fashion kimono comfortably, as to not inhibit movement. Kyotsu's skin betrays his outdoorsy nature, tan and ruddy from the wind and sun. On duty, Kyotsu keeps his long hair half up, to keep it out of his eyes. In casual situations, he usually wears at least half a smile.  The more suspicious members of the Legion may believe him responsible for the spirit activity, as he has "evil eyes," the right one being blue, the left one light brown.

Description:
There is something definitely off about Kaori.  Oh sure she's pretty enough, and her manners are up to snuff; but there is this look in her mismatched eyes that scoffs at social niceties and begs to be out running down game.  She tries not to make enemies.  But anyone as cheerful and as bloodthirsty as Kaori is bound to ruffle more than a few feathers

Oh and she likes smelling people.

Through some twist of fate Kaori was born with a nose like a bloodhound, both in its depth of use and range of palate.  So even though she could chase down a guilty criminal with no more evidence than his scent at the crime scene, she tends to get distracted by piles of garbage or random trees, or perhaps most disturbingly of all, human body odor.  She's been told to control herself, but sometimes people are too fascinating to resist.

Description:

Shinjo Shui is an athletic man who has obviously spent many years of long hours in the saddle.  If observed walking and riding, it is rather clear from the look in his eyes that he much prefers the latter over the former.  He can almost always be seen wearing his light armor draped with the furs that the Unicorn Clan so love.  When in the saddle, he is inseparable from his dai-kyu, and a heavily-laden quiver is slung over the saddle to hang beside him.

The man is said to have an uncanny and near supernatural understanding of his surroundings and location, no matter where he goes.  Whether he can simply find his way based on the flow of the terrain, or whether he has spent countless hours studying maps and exploring, he never seems to get lost.

Of his history, it would not be unknown that he had been a member of the Imperial 5th for 5 years, and prior to that he had served the Baraunghar as a scout, though the details of what exactly this meant remain undisclosed.

Description:

It happens all the time. Someone needs a message delivered quickly and hands it off to the faceless Miya courier to get their scroll to the daimyo of this or that A.S.A.P. And then they forget about him until he comes back with the reply. Nobody cares that he had to mentally plot the shortest course for the recipient even though it took him through a part of the province notorious for highwaymen. Or that, he had to fight said highwaymen with little more than a fan despite lacking any formal training as a bushi. No, nobody cares that he thought of all the little bits of protocol and subtle manipulations that made sure your message was delivered smoothly and you got the extra munitions and food you needed from the daimyo who three weeks ago was spreading rumors about your wife. No, nobody cares about that. Most of the time they can't even be bothered to offer a simple "Domo Miya-san".

So why do we do it? Because we're Miya, and that's how we roll.

Description:
The child of an Iuchi Shugenja and a Shinjo Horsebow Scout, Mebrind encompasses Shinjo's teachings of constant change in the Unicorn by taking both of his parents teachings. He has studied for years between the Archery Dojos in Shiro Shinjo, and recieved training as both a Scout and a Shugenja from Iuchi Quan (http://l5r.wikia.com/wiki/Iuchi_Quan), who is most notable for his part in the Hunt for the (http://www.l5r.com/story/the-hunt-for-the-ebon-daughter-part-1/). Ebon Daughter (http://www.l5r.com/story/the-hunt-for-the-ebon-daughter-part-2/), rather than take normal shugejna tutelage.

Mebrind is Unicorn, in every aspect. He is a man who looks like he hasn't left his saddle in about 3 years, as this is precisely where he would rather be. While he does have "proper" garments, he is loathe to wear them unless it is totally appropriate. In most cases, he prefers to wear a mixture of shugenja regalia and riding clothes. He wears the Unicorn Mon his back and the Iuchi Mon on his heart, and leather wrist brindings on his arms, from elbow to wrist, extending over his right hand to cover index and middle finger.

Not much is known about Mebrind before joining the legion, other than his listing in troop movements around Unicorn borders, with both Iuchi shugenja and Shinjo Scouts. Due to the hybrid nature of his training, he isn't as "learned" as other shugenja, and as a result isn't very comfortable around others when discussions such as theology arise. In spite of this, he has a knack for coming out with small gems of knowledge from the most obscure of topics from time to time (Imagine the guy who randomly knows the answer to a question 5 other people together have no collective clue about).

The first thing one would notice about Togashi Kai is that he is not, by any stretch of the imagination, dressed for the winter months.  His feet are bare, his hakama is a light stretch of green, and he wears nothing from the waist up. Of course, that's where the other parts of him become noticeable.

Kai, like many of the tattooed order, is a well muscled man, used to the harsh climates of the mountains.  His emerald green eyes take a certain joy in all that life has to offer, from the simplest insect to the largest structures in Rokugan.  Right above that eye is the symbol of the void, which often glows in a soft green light.  Any chance he ever had of being more than average in attractiveness is ruined by this tattoo, which seems at times off putting.

The top of his shoulder blades are adorned with the wind, which seems to actually move on occasion, especially in combat.  A raging ocean swirls around his stomach, some times moving up to his chest.  And finally, there is the perched phoenix under the wind, which seems to shirk away from the great gale whenever possible, almost as if it is actually trying to shelter itself from the cold.
