Hello all, just got registered since I have a massive break at college due to finishing a midterm early. Sadly I have not my books along so I shall have to wait a until I get home to get the crunch of my character done. But alas, my weary tale is not one to bring to your attention. Glad to get to work with you all. And by work I mean make an awesome event in our spare and not so spare time.

Something tells me that won't be an issue. Perhaps my lack of aim.  ;)

I think as we gather more people, we'll see a wider selection of clans and schools . I think another Dragon may be coming, unless you're already on Adam, in which case I'm friggin blind. I do find our resident Shinjo's Clan and Family mix to be interesting. I've never seen a Unicorn play a Crane school. Though I've noticed that all the approved list are bushi, either West or North Companies. I wonder when South and East Companies will start to fill in. 

All I can say is that you people in North who have some sort of dependant/true love thing going on are gonna get sooooo ribbed.

STORY TIME!
Back in the first forum game I ran called Words Cut Like Steel, I created an NPC called Doji Sakurako (this was a full year before the card came out of the same name).  She was the daughter of the very prestigious duelist and diplomat Doji Kazo http://l5r.wikia.com/wiki/Doji_Kazo.  But I made her incredibly stuck up and super 'noble'.  One of her claims of fame was that she was a member of the Pink Cranes, a sorority that I made up (because if they Rokugan has academies you know each school has clubs inside of it so everyone knows who the in crowd and the out crowd is).  The Pinks Cranes was the top tier of the woman's club at KDA, and Sakurako used that as leverage against the PCs.  I never came up with the traditions and rituals of the Pink Cranes, only that they were women that came from the most glorious of samurai lines (or the richest).  Sakurako was probably not representative of the women in the club as Crane tend to be more honorable than her (she was a secret Kolat) but it is probably easy in the club to succumb to being as flighty and snobby as she is if you're not careful.  The only thing I did solidify is to show that you are part of the club your crane or family mons would be colored powdered pink, and you received a powder pink kimono with a white crane mon on it as your official Pink Crane dress when doing official Pink Crane stuff.  And that is the story of the Pink Cranes... so far.  I would love to expand on them at any opportunity because I loved the idea.

We are like graphic engines - you feed the code, we deliver visual fireworks. Your character is remembered forever. Clearly, there are no losers.

But the call is ultimately yours, of course. The information you give out freely won\'t be wrested from you. You spare this beautiful world much violence this way.

As a Mantis, I have to appreciate the accounting involved.  As a player, the itemized list was a bit annoying.

Well, after many many revisions, I've sent in my character sheet + background now.

I hope I didn't lost count there on my points during those revisions.

I need to send my background. Problem is, I know all I want to say, how I want to say it, but... I just can't start the background with an adequate sentence :X

I start with "Heisuke was born into..." scratch and try to find another, normally going AGAIN to the same sentence. I am seriously consider "This be Heisuke. He be fine." as a choice.

Don't try to make the background literary inventive. It should be easy to read, somewhat defining and with enough gaps to fill later on ;D

Mind me, I'm still half through my own, and it's not gonna be that long anyway. But right now I'm at the "oh God why did I want to build shelves on one whole wall of my room?" that isn't giving me much free time :P

Yeah.... I suppose I ought to go ahead and at least let the DM know the exact details of her background... but I hate ruining surprises. Even for GMs... though I know GMs hate surprises... >.<

Backgrounds can be a pain. I usually start with where they were born or how they look. Though I just pound it out as best I can. I try to make each a different person, but some overlap can happen. I tend to play the goodie goodie mostly. Though I've played my share of relaxed characters.

I usually keep my backgrounds pretty basic and build on them afterwards if necessary.   Wake is a pretty simple character though so after the basics there wasn't really much to add.

The 20 additional questions are useful and make one think too. Never forget them.

And you do tend to play good characters Toku. I tend to play very straight ace samurai ko, effeminate/confused bushi, duelists who are secretly ninjas, horribly dirty shugenja (what? It's a fun contrast! Look up any religion's priest history and pretty much they all do it...) and sometimes the odd angry guy. I tend to find the angry guys die very quickly...

No, that's a PC.  They emailed me their sheet and I've already done the math and approved the background.  They just need to register their account.  I think the person is at work right now so sometime tonight you'll see 'em.

I've played many, many, different things. Some good, some not so good. I like trying different things, even if I have some favourite-themes I return to.

Sometimes, background flows easily and I can put down my thoughts well. Sometimes, I have difficulties putting it down. It happens to everyone. I've found that I enjoy leaving parts of the background open to later be filled in.

Background holes ready to fill are the best thing ever.
