Title: Chui Contention Resolution
Post by: Evil Bob on September 15, 2011, 08:40:18 AM
I actually want a conversation about how to resolve conflict of Chui for each company.

Each company only has one Chui, and they act as the head of that company.  In other games they would be the same as Clan Heads for the game.  This is an important position, for OOC reasons as well as IC reasons.  Everyone will look to the person for leadership and support in the game and will want them as competent as possible.  To this end I want to ask the players this:

Are you fine with the Chui position being determined randomly from all those who take the advantage?  This will give everyone a fair chance to become Chui without politics that may, from the very start, divide a company.  This may result in a PC that is very inexperienced with leadership.

OR

Would you, when the time comes to solidify who the Chui is before game start, vote on the Chui from the contenders?  This will allow people time to pick the best person for the job giving them an edge for their company.  The downside would be that it could become a popularity contest and some people may become embittered by the result.

I'd like to know what everyone thinks, even if they have different ideas from what is above.  Thanks!

As long as the players know the responsibility they are being given, I'm fine with the results being random.

Yes.

Ok, to be more specific: It really depends on how many decide to go out for the position. Now granted, there are a few weeks until the game starts, but I've only seen one chui contender for North (sorry, haven't been paying attention to the rest), so obviously there's no vote to make.

I think if we only get two or three for each position, perhaps they could talk it out with the GMs and come to an agreement and/or make a random selection. If they can't, or if there's an influx of contenders for each company, then you could put it up for a vote.

Now, if you get, as an example, two contenders for North, but none for South, perhaps one of the North contenders can migrate to South? Just a thought.

Personally, I was gonna wait until most of the group gathered, and then ask what positions in North still needed to be filled. And then talk to you GMs about taking one of those positions.  *shrug*

I'm actually not too concerned with filling empty positions of Gunso and below.  The on part of a legion can be very big with hundreds/thousands of samurai so those positions just get lost in the bureaucracy and don't matter to the story.  So don't worry if you're missing a Gunso or Nikutai.  As long as you have at least one of each your company should be fine.

I'll just toss this in here:

Since I am making a character to be an advisor for the higher-ups, if someone starts the game as a Chui and want someone to advise them, feel free to give me a PM as I would like to volunteer for the task.

To me, it depends on how many more people we can get in the game. Having never Pbp'd before, I worry that if we don't have enough, making a player the Chui would give them immense power.

That said, I say let us work it out*.
I, for one, thin Shosuro Zhelazo would make an excellent Chui...  ;D

Actually, I will take up my advisory position with my good friend Kitsuki Yasuko

*like a boss. I don't really know where that came from, sorry

I would advice, if there are plenty of suitors for each of the positions, that additional advantages are bought to justify the promotion.

Remember kids, it's not the better one that wins but rather the one with the biggest friends. Or deeper pouch. Or the one that was in that party where you did that thing you wish no one had seen.

In most other PbP games I've played they would have a thing called 'Clan Heads'.  Basically they categorize players in the game by clan.  The Clan Head would be responsible for the discipline and goals of the clan.  Basically the cat herder, making sure the players have stuff to do or have someone to complain to.  It works well, except when it doesn't, but then people usually work to pick up the slack then.

Oh, I can herd cats. So I shall humbly set my name amongst the candidates.

As the only contender at the moment, anything I may add may seem catty, so I'll just say random is fine. I made two different advantage lists, one for Chui, one for Gunso. Imperial Spouse seemed to fit rather well for a Minor Clansmen getting that prestigious a post, even if I'll only have 5 status and not get the .5 for the advantage. Otherwise that'd already make me equal to a taisa. I don't like playing politics this early in the game, and within the same company. I don't want to create any sort of breakdown that will hurt North in the future.

How about we resolve the issue with a drinking contest?

I wonder... would it be fun and acceptable to you and GMs if we matched companies to these constellation symbols?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Symbols_(Chinese_constellation)

Would add some more symbolic and emblematic fluffiness to the division...

I would agree if they change the names of the companies then, Black Tortoise should be Courtiers (making them North), Red Phoenix should be Bushi (making them South), Blue Dragon should be Shugenja (Making them West) and White Tiger should be Scouts (Making them East)

You got east and west backwards. :P

Also, the Japanese names for each are: Byakko the white tiger, Seiryuu the azure dragon, Suzaku the vermilion bird and Genbu the black tortoise.  I think those would work as company names as well. :O

As long as the Seiryuu folks don't try to conquer the rest of the companies, I'm okay with that!

Now that each company has a mythical god-beast associated with it, should we stitch a patch to our kimono to signify it? :P

Alright, changed everyone's company name.  Please update your signatures.  Also the colors at the bottom of the forum have changed.
Those that don't have a company (i.e. haven't submitted a character sheet yet) are Green now.  Everyone else, I'm sure you can guess what is what now.

You should have company and legion patches and banners as well.

Uhhh we're Kagami.

Though, fun fact, the Red Phoenix was related more to Magic than the Blue Dragon. Maybe we should change to Seiryu?

I'm not changing them again.  It's a little confusing for everyone right now getting use to the current changes, and I'm satisfied with how thing are right now.
