A thread for avoiding further coordination failures.

So at the moment we likely have:

Gunso (Yosai)
2 Nikutai (Shu and Karoshi)
2 Unspecified (Yasuko and Zhelazo)

We will certainly need one more gunso as one is supposed to advance to chui. I wouldn\'t mind if Yosai took the mantle. His Kaiu breed makes me think of koutetsukans, and we\'re Black Tortoises! But some other options may be nice too.

Yasuko, Zhelazo, are you aspiring to be an officer, or you prefer being rank and file?

A friend of mine should be signing up as a Doji courtier sometime before game starts.

Hey I like the name myself, as well as I don't have an issure if my promotion comes up and needs to be done.

The name of the thread made me think of a whole lot of samurai making a giant mechanic robot turtle. Then it got me thinking and now I have this Voltron-thing in my head made up by the four different companies.

As far as I can tell, Miki wants to be a battlefield duelist, while Shu wants to be a champion for courtiers.

Well, perhaps Shu and I should duel and see who best ought represent the courtiers in a duel.

In short, I can just say: no, Yasuko is not (and currently have no plans) to aspire to be an officer.

If that's what you want. 

Lets define the duties of this unit a bit more before we say what we can and cannot do.  There are many responsibilities.

1. To come up with political advice on the nature of future actions, including conflicts and battles.
2. To dispute rules of engagement with honorable allies, negotiate cease fires and negotiate surrenders (from the enemy, of course)
3. To make commanders and officers look totally bad ass when they have a good looking, capable staff with them (lawyers all wear suits for a reason, courtier all look good for the same)
4. To make sure the legion itself follows it's rules and regulations and fights honorably (they can record the actions, but not punish, they can only advise the officers to do so.  They can investigate, though)
5. To record the struggles and triumphs of the Legion for the Imperial Record and for kick ass stories to be told at Winter Courts.

They also have the same duties as all legionaries: Protect the Empire from threats to it.  Protect the reputation and glory of the Empress.  Protect the Legion, and defeat all enemies.

So please follow these guidelines.  If you have anything to add to this, please feel free to make suggestion.

To prevent collateral damage from potential infighting, to provide solid make-up whenever somebody's sins rear their ugly face and threaten reputation and collective integrity of the Legion.

To find and remove choke points in chain of command and distribution of resources.

No point in calling raises on a Focus roll. I'd be able to do 2 attacks, a feint, and called shot eyeball for free on the strike though, and still have a target TN of basically zero.

I am only making a quick observation, I am sure your are more along lines of a scorpion magistrate with plenty of skills all around. Least that's me making assumptions in OOC stuffs.

We're all filled up on nikutai here though.

You would have to duke it out with either one, as well as if you wanted Gunso (Standing challenge of howitzers at dawn). The Chui position isn't taken though if you want swing those points.

Professionally no, but I have one, now I am trying to figure out where that intuitive leap came from.

Has anyone noticed that the smartest and most modern clan is, in fact, the Crab?  Strange since most people think of the stupid Hida that smashes before thinking but hear me out.
Kuni use anatomy and scientific method.
Kaiu are into engineering, which is the practical application of science.
Yasuki are into advanced economics.
Any other clan could boast one of these achievements, but only the Crab have all of them!

I played in a game (as a Scorpion) with an Honorless Kitsuki Investigator. he had spent as many points as he could on eprceived Honor. It played like The Shield or The Wire. We were magistrates. And very bad cops.

Byakko secret squad: Lanternoil.  Outside the empire, beyond the magistrates.  Fighting for the future on behalf of samurai-kind.  The 13th century is when everything changes, and Lanternoil is ready.

Question for the GMs:

For those of us who have chosen an advisor-role to serve in the military here, do we pick our own Chui (or Gunso, or whoever we advise?), or is it something that is left to the superiors (aka the GMs) ?

When it comes to being an advisor to another player I would talk to that player and establish a relationship.  I don't think it will be a good idea to be an advisor to Hidemitsu himself, because he will not have as personal relationship as with a PC because the GM juggle several NPCs and gameplay, so there is less time to run him.

I already put you up in my company list as an adjunct. Hope you don't mind ^^u

And on more serious note, Yosai, I have some heimin capability for minor repairs and crafting simple items, but the big things like structures and such are for the command staff to handle. I guess you may carve a niche in there for yourself with your natural predilections, you may want to talk to GMs about it.

Yeah I probaby should but to the real question as to wither it will actually come up. From my take on it we are already set up structure wise for winter.

Well, I was just considering following things:

1. Harsh weather makes structures erode or hinder their functionality.
2. Their defensibility is not a given, but something to be maintained, improved and adjusted to new conditions.
3. In case of sabotage or a destruction of different origin, there should be a person to set up emergency reconstruction.

My bet is that EB wouldn't set up a Legion for us here with all the command chain and stuff if we were not supposed to fight. And it may well be that it is us who gets attacked rather than the other way around.

Toturi Sezaru got his gempukku and was serving the Imperial families by the time he was my age. Naka Kuro, one of the first Grand Masters of the Elements, had finished all training in the Isawa school at an age younger than I. I am young. But I am an adult.

Surely an honorable Lion would not dishonor my name, the decisions of my sensei and the names of those who came before by saying otherwise. Right?

When they are the only widely-known comparisons Yoritomo-sama, and the obvious ones no moral man would wish to dishonor, to do so is only natural. Say what you will but there are not many examples of samurai who achieved their gempukku prior to the age of ten to draw upon and I had to be sure that the chosen names would be familiar to Akodo-sama.

That said, your argument is flawed for I did not compare our skills or the glory of our names, but rather pointed out a single quality we share as a citation of historical precedent. A bushi of the Lion will often point out proudly that he is of the same clan as many specific Lion heroes, and to allow insult upon the actions of his clan, dishonors not just him but those who took part in similar action before him. However, this does not mean that he is truly comparing himself to Akodo One-Eye.

That said, if you believe citing historical precedent to be hubris, I would have you take such claims up with the Ikoma Historians, the masters of the Asako libraries and those who maintain stores of knowledge within your own clan. I suspect they would question the validity of such wisdom.

Soshi-sama, I would agree. I do not seek to emulate the extremes. I do not pursue knowledge beyond what is acceptable. To know of war is an honorable pursuit as, as any Lion will tell you, samurai are made for war.

Do not underestimate anyone. A child with a knife can still kill someone and a cripple can still lead a hoard into a trap. Age is not a factor to One's worth. On the wall sometimes one's ability to scream is enough to make then considered one of the greatest of their generation. If they have passed their gempukku, then treat them as such. Let their actions be the weight of their worth.

I had considered taking it on but there were two major problems that arose:

1.) Gunso (prerequisite for Chui) is 8 pts and the limit on advantages is 15 pts. This makes me a sad panda.

2.) Being Chui requires, and I quote Evil Bob when I say this, "dedication". My real life does not afford me the luxury of dedication to a forum game. So, sadly, it would appear I'm unqualified for the spot.

However, if any of y'all have a message that needs deliverin'...

Yea Kabuto is designed to be more "courier" and less "courtier" although I suppose in Rokugani society there's quite a bit of overlap.
