Eh, almost all warrior people of old had it at one point. It is a natural thing. Regrettable from our modern point of view, but quite natural. No need to be embarrassed about it. Of course, given this setting is a fantastic one that idealizes the samurai stories from the point of view of a westerner, I don't think historical accuracy is a worry. Especially on such morally ambiguous things.

It's mostly spawned from the Roman views. Romans despised homosexuality as a Greek vice, and while there were many that practiced (specially in the first class), it was heavely penalized and was short of political suicide. Example, Gaius Marius publicly decorated the soldier that killed his nephew (who was homosexual and had made advances on the soldier), claiming his army would be a Fortress of Virtue and Rectitude. Cato the Elder also shared this extremism, to the point where he despised anything that was greek. In the campaign against Antiochus the III (and his subsequent crushing victory on Thermopylae) Cato madeno attempts to hide his distaste and hatred for the greeks, destroying Sparta, Corinthia and sacking Athens. |
