A single Legion is commanded by a Taisa, your Legion is the Imperial 5th.  Your Taisa has been killed in battle and the Shireikan has opted to travel with your Legion.  Your Shireikan is Seppun Hidemitsu.  Below the Rank of Taisa is Chui and is the commander of a company (made up of squads below him).  There are four companies.

Suzaku Company of the South: Made up of three PC squads, each squad commanded by a Gunso and Nikutai.  The primary focus of this company is warrior bushi, those that make up the core fighting force of the Legion.

Seiryuu Company of the East: Made up of one PC squads, each squad commanded by a Gunso and Nikutai.  This is magic unit of the Legion, made up of Shugenja.  They take the rolls of support, healing and sometimes use powerful magic to change the tide of battle.

Byakko Company of the West: Made up of two PC squads, each squad commanded by a Gunso and Nikutai.  This is the scout company.  They do recon, and harry the enemy to move them into position.  They can also perform flanking maneuvers if cavalry is unable.

Genbu Company of the North: Made up of one PC squad, commanded by a Gunso and two Nikutai.  This company are the courtier advisers of the Taisa and Generals.  They are the smallest company as they are non combatants but essential to keep honorable combat and negotiations.  South Company has two Nikutai, one that assists the Gunso directly the other is the Quartermaster for the entire Legion.

There are many other squads part of this army but are only filled by NPCs.

Squad Names: Any PC part of a squad may name their squad as they feel.  You can discuss this in the OOC forum.  Please organize your squads by type (please keep all cavalry together for example).

Addressing an Officer: When addressing a superior officer you will do so by rank.  Formal: Hida-Gunso, Hida Renji-Gunso  Personal: Renji-Gunso.  When a superior officer address you he may do so by rank or may simply address you with the -san suffix.  Even those not in the military will abide these rules.

I'm an Officer!  What can I do?
You have a range of powers but you are also limited by the scope of this game.  Understandably an officer could do more, but in order to make the game challenging and fun this is limited in certain ways.  But lets start off with what you can do.

Powers of the Nikutai:
Order a PC: A Nikutai can give an order to a PC of lower status than him if he is in the same Squad.  This order cannot last more than a day, unless he is order not to be near or interact with a certain person.
Order a single NPC: A Nikutai can order one NPC in his squad to do something small.  Guard this item or other NPC.  He cannot be order to guard a PC or to guard the Nikutai.  He may also order an NPC to go to a location and stay there, perform some task or, guard or watch.
Request Gear: He may make a request to the Quartermaster for items.  This request will be seriously considered instead of dismissed out of hand.  If you are the Quartermaster you have everything and may use it at your discretion.

Powers of the Gunso:
A Gunso has all the powers that a Nikutai has in regard to his squad.
Order a Group of NPCs: A Gunso can order a group of NPCs to do certain tasks.  They can go to a certain location and guard it, watch it or simply stay there.  They may also be assigned to guard an item if need be, but not a person.  A group cannot be a protecting entourage, for himself, other PCs or NPCs.  A Group can also be told to: Explore an area or Patrol and area.  A courtier group maybe told to stop, help or move individuals or groups if you are in command of courtiers.
Fighting an Enemy: A Gunso can command his squad to fight an equal enemy.  A Gunso can order a Charge, Hold or Retreat.  Charge is like a full attack and is used to crush an enemy quickly but may give the squad many losses.  A Hold will fight the enemy on equal footing.  A Retreat is used to save as many soldiers as possible, but the location will be sacrificed.
Order Gear: A Gunso can order any gear available from the Quartermaster.
Order Punishment: A Gunso may punish any PC in his squad.  Punishments must be approved by the GM.

Powers of a Chui:
A Chui has all the Powers of a Nikuai in regard to his company.  He also has the Gunso power of Ordering Gear.
Honor Guard: When in town, on the road or at the temple the Chui may have 2 rank 1 NPCs for an honor guard.  When in more dangerous settings the Chui will have to get PCs to protect him.
Replace Gunso: A Chui may take direct control of a Squad and act as a Gunso, using all powers therein.  This is only done if he has lost trust in his Gunso, otherwise he would simply tell the Gunso what he needs done and trust the Gunso to do it.
Set Agenda: The Chui has a great deal of power when it comes to making goals for his company.  All members of that company is expected to work towards the agenda of the Chui.
Demote: With GM approval a Chiu can remove status from those in his company.
Promote: If a Chui has a position open he may give a field promotion to any in his company or give the position to anyone from another company with permission from their commanding officer.

It may be helpful to make a post showing which positions have been filled.  Just a suggestion.

I added it to the character description thread.  Also I everyone should have their company in their character signature.  That would work far better than a list actually.

Just noticed!  You don't need to put your company in your sig because it's displayed right above your avatar!

Yes, a bushi who is strong in social skills (at least 3 in 2 social skills and traits that govern those) and knowledge of iaijutsu art maybe part of the Genbu company.  If anyone wants to change companies because of this, please contact me privately.
